Crybaby Ass Fool by artist Christian Vargas, 2019
Primitive feeling vessel with four tear-stained faces of Jesús Malverde (the Sinaloan patron saint of drug dealers) resting on a small nine legged table reminiscent of pre-Columbian pottery.
9 x 9 x 8"
Vargas' sculptures examine the power of belief, faith, boundaries of humor and familiarity. Using clay as a material to hold an inherent history and tactile memory, and molds from cultural oddities, Vargas creates objects that layer symbolism in an effort to create his own folklore.
