Hand woven cotton Mali textile with four row arrow stripe pattern using stitch-resist and tie-resist dyed in natural indigo vats.

Indigo textile designs are symbolic of wealth and prosperity and the fabric is admired by almost every ethnic group on the continent. The cotton fabric is first hand-woven on looms. Patterns are created using stitch-resist and tie-resist and then dyed using leaves from the indigo plant that have been beaten into a pulp, rolled into balls, and then left to dry in the sun for two to three days. After this, they are mixed in an ash and water solution that acts as a fixative for the indigo dye. The indigo is dyed a deep blue that is almost black, but gives a ghostly blue tint around the white resist pattern.

58" x 45.5"

Natural indigo may shed color in the beginning. You may wish to launder the fabric prior to using to remove excess dye. We recommend washing by hand in cold water using a mild laundry soap and air dry laying flat.
