IAN REID | Interviews and Press Coverage
Ian Reid is a skater, a photographer, a filmmaker, a raconteur, an obsessive of subcultures, and a Brooklynite – but mostly he's a photographer. His current show, A Day's Work, is comprised of photos from his time spent collaborating with members of New York's BDSM community, but make no mistake, this exhibition was born out of skateboarding. When legendary skater Mike Carroll of Girl Skateboards decided he wanted his new pro deck to be adorned with Ian's photos, many of those involved were a bit hesitant. It was a risk for the company to use such provocative imagery and for Ian, who has been completely dedicated to his photography since 2008, it was a risk that might keep him in the small box of "skate photographer/filmer." Instead, it became a win all the way around. Not only for Girl and Ian, but for the BDSM community as well.
VICE's The Creators Project, which reports on new and established artists as well as the latest happenings in the art world, spoke with Ian about the mainstreaming of BDSM culture.
HAVOC TV, who cover action sports and art, came through while the show was being installed to interview Ian about his work. They got a bit more than they bargained for when one of Ian's models began skateboarding naked in front of the gallery.
GIRL made their own little behind the scenes video of the Ian's installation, the naked girl in the street, and the opening reception.
MONSTER CHILDREN tagged along on a shoot for a quick chat with Ian.
The consistently hilarious and infamous skateboarder and funny man Tim O'Connor interviewed Ian and Mike Carroll on his podcast THE TIM O'CONNOR SHOW to discuss their collaboration, BDSM, Skateboarding, and scat parties. NOT SAFE FOR WORK but definitely listen in private to this hysterical chat between three legends.
The good folks at JUXTAPOSE came through and covered the opening which was packed with an interesting blend of skate stars, photographers, artists, and pornographers.
