hide (by photographer Jason Vaughn) is a typology of Wisconsin deer stands, intended as a reflection on families and traditions. When I was diagnosed with leukemia in 2011, my work on hide was put on hold. I was 32 with a 3-month-old baby at home. Suddenly, hide took on a more personal meaning. As I documented these hand-built structures passed down through generations, I contemplated the legacy I might leave to my own son. I reflected on these stands not as symbols of violence and death, but of oneness with nature and time spent with family. I returned to the project with a new perspective on the ideas of permanence and impermanence, legacies and family, and accepting change." Published by
